To Look a Fool
I love you
you say,
gazing into me
and
it’s too soon,
far too soon.
But
I want to
believe you
Because
I love you
too.
I can feel the truth of it
settling warm in my chest
as though I have known it
all this time.
I can feel it spreading
to every cell in my being,
warming me
like golden honey.
And I know
you can see
my head
fighting my heart,
as I recall
all the times
I’ve been hurt.
How many times
I’ve believed those words
before,
only to look
a fool later on.
But
I can’t help
but wonder,
Would it be so bad
to look a fool
once more?
If only to know
what it is like
to be loved by you,
even for a moment.
